Howard Huws is a Welsh author, translator, and independent researcher with a deep interest in Orthodox Christianity, early Celtic saints, Welsh history, folklore, and holy wells.
A native of Wales, he studied Zoology at the University of Wales, where he developed a passion for Welsh history and literature. He worked for many years with the Welsh Water Authority and later as a Welsh/English translator for the Environment Agency Wales.
Raised in Congregationalist and Anglican congregations, Huws converted to Orthodox Christianity in 1987 after attending his first Divine Liturgy under Archimandrite Deiniol in Blaenau Ffestiniog, Wales – an experience he described as profoundly different from anything he had known before.
His writings often bridge Orthodox spirituality with the ancient Christian heritage of Britain. Notable works include St. Germanus of Auxerre (2011), a comprehensive study of the 5th-century saint revered in both Gaul and Britain; lives of saints such as St John the Russian; books on the saints of ancient Wales (including a Russian edition); and studies of Welsh holy wells and folklore.
The book St. Germanus of Auxerre arose from Huws’ desire to gather all known historical and hagiographical material about this influential bishop – a key figure in post-Roman Britain – into a single accessible volume for Orthodox and historically-minded readers.
